When you see the beautiful, flower-rich meadows that are still common in many places in Bulgaria, you will not be surprised to hear that Bulgaria has a high reputation as producer of honey of excellent quality. Moreover, most of the honey in Bulgaria is produced as a hobby or as a part time business, so most producers put a lot of care and effort in producing a beautiful product.

The rich, dark Strandja honey is a very special natural product

Healing properties

Honey has been used for ages, for consumption because it is of course simply delicious, but also for its medicinal properties. It has strong antifungal and antibiotic properties, and has been used for healing wounds and treating throat problems. When I had a recurrent bacterial throat infection and refused to take antibiotics again, I tried a mixture of honey and lemon juice instead. Within a few days the problems were gone, without the use of any chemicals that would have killed off the friendly bacteria that help me to digest my food every day!

Special Strandja honey

In Strandja you can find a very special type of honey. It is known as forest or honeydew honey, because the bees do not collect nectar from flowers, but liquid from oaks where aphids live. The honey that these bees produce is especially healthy. Research has shown that it is higher in antioxidants than nectar honey. It also has higher antibacterial properties. This type of honey is quite rare, but the oak forests of Strandja are one of the places where this natural product is produced in abundance.

If you visit Strandja, make sure you taste this rich, dark brown honey. And of course bring back a pot or two for friends!
